David M. Dobrzynski, MD, is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Infectious Diseases at the University of Rochester Medicine. His clinical interests include epidemiology and therapeutics for respiratory viral infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and global health. He also remains active in teaching of fellows, residents, and medical students
How long have you worked with a VTEU?
I started working with the University of Rochester VTEU in 2021 shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic started.
Briefly describe the IDCRC-supported trials you’ve supported.
The first trial I worked on was the Mix and Match study which was followed by the COVAIL trial. I am also leading a pilot study looking into malaria resistance in Northern Uganda that is supported through our URMC VTEU.
Of these trials, what has been the most impactful or a highlight of the work?
I think the obvious answer is the Mix and Match COVID vaccine study. Not only was it done in an incredibly short period of time, it was extremely impactful on national and international policies. The ability to prove that receiving different combinations of vaccines were effective and safe helped people make informed decisions about their health and improve supply chain and manufacturing issues.
What is a strength or example of the importance of the IDCRC?
The greatest strength of the IDCRC is the people and participants that drive science forward even in the face of adversity. I have gotten to know colleagues better and foster collaborations that I didn’t think were possible a few years ago. It is making me a stronger physician and researcher and driving me to ask questions that will hopefully advance our understanding of vaccinology and infectious diseases further.
What do you like to do outside of the VTEU?
I am an avid golfer and love wildlife photography. I have recently traveled to Costa Rica and Botswana on safaris and have gotten to meet extraordinary people and see some amazing wildlife. I am also a proud owner of a 12 year old rescue dog named Millie who has been with me since residency.
